Six years ago today, I gave birth to an ugly baby.
Upon seeing my baby for the first time, a wave of disappointment washed over me—a far cry from the tales I hear from other moms. They all told me that upon seeing their baby for the first time, an inexplicable joy enveloped them, and that they told themselves that the birth pains were all worth it.
But ever the weird person that I am, in my mind I was thinking, “Ito na ‘yun?!? Seryoso?!?” I was expecting a Johnson’s Baby commercial-esque baby with a robust and almost cherubic face. After all, the nine months that I carried that baby in my womb was the worst nine months of my life—all day “morning” sickness, achy everything, mood swings, bloated everything, etc.
Plus, maganda ako at gwapo ang asawa ko—so bakit ganyan ang baby ko?!?
Fast forward to today, when that ugly baby turned into this gorgeous boy.

A boy who never ceases to amaze his Tatay and me…
…to bring us pride…
…to make us laugh…
Anong porma ito Raviv?!? Swimming goggles + sword + medal + newsboy cap + pyjamas?!?
Raviv’s request early today: “Nay, can you teach me how to wash my pwet by myself when I poo-poo? Coz I’m already 6 na eh.”
…and to strengthen our marriage.
To the ugly boy born on December 26, 2010 at 12:10 a.m. in Alabang via normal delivery and who made me miserable for nine months, YOU ARE MORE THAN WORTH EVERYTHING! I stare at you and I am always in disbelief how blessed I am that you carry my genes. The nine months I suffered was a privilege—a privilege that I was the vessel that brought you to the world. You are my and Tatay’s pride and joy, and you can’t even begin to imagine how much we love you!
Happy birthday, 6th birthday, Raviv!
PS: This scares me, Raviv:
