Life and Death Were Unfair to Cecil Geronda

At the risk of getting flak from Ray Bernard Penaranda’s friend, family, classmates, etc., I am saying, UNFAIR ANG LOCAL GOVERNMENT KAY ROCHEL!

When I visited Rochel’s family last Saturday, they had nothing but kind words to say about our mayor, vice-governor, and governor.  Rochel’s family, being indigent, probably felt honored that these officials took notice of them.  But mind you, as of Saturday, it was only Vice Governor Cesar Perez who personally visited Rochel’s wake.  Rochel’s aunt was among the leaders of Mayor Ton Genuino’s campaign, but the mayor only called and promised to help.  OK.  Notice too that almost nothing was done–Rochel’s death did not seem to warrant any hullabaloo from among thre local government.  After all, sino ba naman ‘yang sampaguita vendor na ‘yan na ni-rape at pinatay, right? Life Given By Jasmines, Life Taken Away By Rapists

I can’t sleep.  I am haunted by thoughts of Rochel aka Cecil Geronda.  I am now supposed to move on to my fellow Isko Ray Bernard Penaranda’s death, but I can’t.  I’m still stuck to Rochel.  And the 2004 article “Life Given by Jasmines” by fellow UPLB BS DevCom alumna Rose Mananghaya is the culprit.

MARCH 1, 2012—Five men, aged 15 to 25 years old, have been brought to the Los Baños Municipal Police Station as alleged perpetrators in the rape and murder of Rochel Geronda. ERRATUM: The men were brought in to be questioned about the rape and murder of Rochel Geronda.
The victim, a 14 year-old student at the Los Baños Nation High School (LBNHS), was found dead near a junkyard in Demarces Subdivision on the morning of February 29.

PO2 Eduardo Cruz, presiding investigator for the case, says that the possible suspects are to undergo a buccal swabbing test. This will determine whether the semen retrieved from the victim matches that of any of the alleged criminals. ERRATUM: PO2 Cruz says that two of the men have agreed to undergo a buccal swabbing test. Saliva samples will be used as specimens for DNA matching.

These will be handed over to the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) on Monday for analysis.

The municipal government is offering a reward of 50,000 pesos to anyone who can provide information that can help identify suspects.

Justice Must Also Be Given to Rochel Geronda!

In just more or less three months, I have shuddered twice during our Victory Small Group Meeting.  First was last October when I heard of what happened to Given Grace Cebanico.  And today again when my groupmate Chi Cariaso asked us to utter a word of prayer for Rochel Geronda, the Los Banos National High School student/sampaguita vendor who was mercilessly raped (probably) and killed in the evening of February 28.

When I saw her picture flashed on TV earlier, I am pretty certain I’ve seen her a couple of times, trying to sell her sampaguita.  Chi and Rhia (my other groupmate) mentioned that they were able to invite Rochel and her co-sampaguita vendors to church several times.

JUSTICE!
